The Tsaatan people are famous for being reindeer herders. During the summer months some of them come down to “entertain” tourists and sell some trinkets to make some money. I was in Mongolia on business as I had been for many years and decided I should see more than Ulan Bataar and the road out to the mine. At the same time I wanted to fly fish for the famous Taimen salmonoid fish and see Lake Hovsgol. I flew into Moron and headed to the Lake Hovsgol camp. There was a small ship that sailed over the other side of the lake to where the Tsaatan people would be camped in their ortz (like the tee pees the American Indians use) with some reindeer. I was the only foreigner on the ship. The rest were Mongolians coming to see a part of their country. They said the reindeer were suffering from the heat. The weather much warmer than they would have liked. The meat from a freshly slaughtered reindeer was draped over the branches of a tree. The Tsaatan people were mostly expressionless. Such a hard life and to be a tourist attraction doing something they had done for generations must have been a bit bewildering. The ortz itself was very simple. I guessed they would have a more permanent camp back up in the mountains.
