Siglap Barbers
Old barber shops still dot the heartlands of Singapore, though less each year as the barbers get old and retire. I would visit my local barber for a trim and shave if I wanted to look sharp for a special occasion such as The Australia Day Ball. When I heard that the frame maker next door didn’t have his lease renewed I guess the same would happen to the barber. So I went down and took some photos before they moved across the road from an old shop house to a modern glass fronted box. Likewise when we heard that the HDB block opposite the Siglap Center was being emptied of tenants I went there to photograph another part of disappearing Singapore. The barbers were also Malay guys with a love for music. There were framed photos of them in bands along with musical instruments hanging on the walls. Something in common with both barbers were brylcreem, hair tonic, hair cream and perfumed talc.
