I was in the UK on holiday and business and as with many Australians I had wanted to go to Gallipoli for ANZAC Day. I found a travel agent and enquired about Anzac Day tours. Fortunately there was one that fitted in with my timing. So I bought a ticket to Istanbul and connected with the tour group. We drove about 4 hours from Istanbul in a small bus down to Galibolu for the night. Vey early the next morning we join the convoy of busses heading to Anzac Cove for dawn service. It was a very cold morning as the well rugged up crowd gathered for the service. We chatted with some very brave (stupid?) Australian servicemen who had come down from the Peacekeeping duties in the Balkans and only had short sleeves. After Dawn service the rest of the tour group wend down to Cape Helles for the British memorial service but I decided to walk up the valley to Lone Pine for the 11am service. From Anzac Cove to the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery then to Shell Green Cemetery where a cricket game was played 2 days before the withdrawal in the 18th and 19th December 1915. From there I worked my way up the trenches that could still be seen to Lone Pine. It was very cold and many were laying of standing in sleeping bags to keep warm. From the service there we all moved on up to Chunuk Bair where the Kiwi troops had advanced on the 1st day of landing. Passing the Turkish 57th Infantry memorial, Coutney’s and Steele’s Post, and Quinn’s Post.
