Tanoura Dancers or Whirling Dervishes, Wekalet El Ghouri Arts Center in Old Cairo

I am not sure how I found out about the whirling dervish performance in Old Cairo. I guess I saw something while walking the back streets as I have done so many times in the Khan el Khalili area. The performances were on twice a week and finding the theatre again wasn’t easy. Unlike the Turkish Whirling Dervishes in their white robes and red fez the Egyptian Sufi dancers have very colourful skirts. The performance starts with music and progresses to the Sufi dancers twirling their skirts, while the musicians played and a singer sang a gorgeous song. Dancers move their layered skirts up and down and take them off and add them on all while spinning. The years of training and skill was very impressive. Overall a most enchanting and enjoyable evening.
