Old Cairo
Most tourists are familiar with Khan el Khalili market. Something Cairo is famous for. Not as many tourists cross the road and head down into Old Cairo and the back alleys that wind their way down under the Cidatel. Things have not changed for centuries down the back alleys and crafts have been passed down through the generations. The last custom Fez maker (well that’s what they told me), the metal workers and polishers. As much for local consumption as for tourists. The old men sitting in cafes chatting and playing dominoes or cards. Fruit and vegetable shops, bakers, butchers, embroiders and shoe makers tucked away in the back streets. Probably my favourite part of Cairo. I always found something new to see that I’d missed in previous walks.
