Tanjung Priok port was built by the Dutch as a deepwater port. Previously all goods into Jakarta were transhipped from an outside harbour to Sunda Kelapa. Today it is the main container port for Jakarta. There is still a large section of Tanjung Priok that is home to intercoastal trade with a large number of pinisi schooners loading goods to send out around the archipelago and bring produce in. Rows of shanties line the road opposite the docks. The children are always playing near the boats. Generations of children have used the port as their playground. Small fishing boats are plentiful. The small boats also ferry boat crews and provisions like cigarettes to the crews on boats waiting to enter the port. Old Jakarta also known as Old Batavia or Kota Tua as it is known by the locals was the original downtown area of Jakarta. Some of the buildings date back to the 1700’s. The old Town Hall is now a museum and Gedoeng Jasindo is relatively modern and is known for having the first elevator in Jakarta. Buildings surrounding the square are being restored to make the area more a tourist friendly destination. Street vendors line the streets and entertainers try to eke out a living from all who visit. My favorite entertainer was the guy with a mobile wooden Wayand show with the colourful puppets dancing to music. The children watching were bopping away having a great time. Nearby are the pet markets. The Jatinegara ‘pet’ market is mostly mammals and reptiles, and the notorious Pramuka bird market is the largest collection of live animals for trade anywhere on earth. Both markets are a hive of illegal endangered species trade with most of those deals carried out in the back alleys. My photos of Tanjung Priok port and the Pramuka bird market were taken in 1998 and then again in 2017. Nothing had really changed. Generations of families carry on with the same jobs eking out a living. The area floods often with the tidal floods exacerbated by Jakarta sinking. Primarily due to excessive groundwater extraction and urban development with global warming causing the sea levels to rise as well.
