Joo Chiat is in the East of Singapore. A long road that was once full of what were called Beach Houses in colonial times. It is also a well known Peranakan area with colouful shophouses that can still be seen and are now mostly restaurants. I lived there in a 4 story walk up apartment back in the early 2000’s. Hardly any of the “walk ups”are left now having been knocked down to build big condominiums. There are many traders and small business still lined along the road. There is a shop specialising in making the paper houses and items that are burned durng a Taoist funerl to symbolize their transfer to the spirit realm. A shop making nothing but popiah skins for hawkers is always busy as is the shop making and selling ba chang (meat rice dumplings wrapped bamboo leaves)
