My first trip to Singapore was in December 1987. I had just done 2 years on Bougainville Island and had a couple of months break before heading back. First time in Asia and the sights, the food and the smells were all new and exciting. We stayed at the Hilton on Orchard Road and the whole street was lit up for Christmas. China Town was a thriving area with wet markets and street stalls. The hawkers were still selling on the streets at night time and some of the animals for sale at the wet markets would raise eyebrows now if still around. Exotic animals like snakes, turtles and frogs were not uncommon. Rickshaws were easily available and not quite as commercial as they are these days.
