Thaipusam
The colour and sounds of Thaipusam is one of the highlights of the year. The painful looking preparations display an incredible display of faith as devotees pierce their bodies with hooks and skewers and is not for the faint hearted or queasy. Devotees carry or pull intricately decorated kavadis. Thaipusam is a Tamil Hindu festival celebrated on the first full moon day of the Tamil month of Thai and is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Hindu god Murugan over the demon Surapadman. The traditional route for kavadi bearers is a 4 kilometer walk from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Serangoon Road to Sri Thendayuthapani Temple Tank Road accompanied by family and supporters.
